The Battle

History & Significance

The far north of Scotland — Caithness and Sutherland — was contested between Jacobite and government-aligned clans throughout 1745-46. Lord Cromartie's Jacobite detachment operated as far north as Thurso and the Pentland Firth, attempting to suppress pro-government Sutherland and MacKay clans while recruiting from Caithness. Government-aligned clans under the Earl of Sutherland resisted these northern Jacobite incursions vigorously. The cat-and-mouse operations in the far north consumed Jacobite forces that were critically needed at Culloden. Cromartie's detachment was captured at Dunrobin on the morning of Culloden, on its way back south — too late.
