History & Significance

Suetonius Paulinus crossed to Anglesey — the heart of Druidic power and last refuge of British resistance. Tacitus describes Roman soldiers paralysed with terror by the sight of black-robed Druidic women with torches. The island was stormed and the sacred groves cut down. The operation was immediately interrupted by Boudicca's revolt.
