The Battle

History & Significance

Fochabers in Moray was the seat of Gordon Castle, residence of the Gordon Duke of Gordon. In 1745 the Duke was nominally pro-government but Lord Lewis Gordon — his younger brother — was a committed Jacobite who raised Gordon clan forces for Prince Charles. Lord Lewis Gordon operated throughout Speyside and Moray in late 1745, securing the northeast for the Jacobite cause. At Fochabers, Gordon clan adherents joined the Jacobite muster while government sympathisers in the coastal towns were subdued. Minor confrontations occurred as the Gordon Jacobites established control of the Moray coast road, cutting the government supply route between Inverness and Aberdeen.
