History & Significance

Owain Gwynedd systematically expanded east during the period of Norman weakness under King Stephen. His capture of Mold in 1144 pushed the Gwynedd frontier into Flintshire. Combined with his recovery of Ceredigion (with his brother Cadwaladr) in 1136 after Crug Mawr, Owain was rebuilding Gwynedd to its greatest extent since Gruffudd ap Llywelyn. His military success made him the dominant Welsh ruler of the twelfth century.
