History & Significance

The reduction of Hampshire hillforts formed part of the systematic pacification of the Atrebates and Belgae territories south of the Thames. Several Hampshire hillforts show evidence of abandonment or assault in the conquest period. Securing Hampshire was strategically important for the naval base and supply route through the Solent to the southwest.
