History & Significance

In August 1651 Cromwell advanced on Perth with his main army after the Scots under Charles II had marched south into England. Perth capitulated after minimal resistance, giving Cromwell control of the administrative capital of Scotland north of the Forth. The fall of Perth completed the English grip on the central Lowlands and Fife while the Scottish army marched to its doom at Worcester.
