The Battle

History & Significance

The raid on Ponteland in 1341 was one of several aggressive moves by the newly confident Scottish military leadership following the recovery of Edinburgh Castle. William Douglas of Lothian led the raid deep into Northumberland, extending the tradition of border raiding established by the Black Douglas and Randolph in the previous generation. The raids maintained pressure on the English border and showed that Scotland intended to continue the offensive despite David II still being in France.
