Portus Adurni (Portchester Castle) is the best-preserved Roman fort in northern Europe, with walls standing to their full height. Its massive walls — 3 metres thick and originally 6 metres high — with projecting bastions designed for artillery were built specifically to counter Saxon seaborne raids. The fort held the strategic entrance to Portsmouth Harbour and was garrisoned throughout the late Roman period.
