Before Runnymede, the rebel barons besieged Northampton Castle in May 1215. The siege failed as the castle held and the barons lacked proper siege equipment. Their failure at Northampton demonstrated the limitations of baronial military capability and pushed them toward London where they succeeded through the city's sympathy. The failed siege was a formative lesson in baronial weakness.
