History & Significance

Agricola completed the conquest of Anglesey that Suetonius Paulinus had begun seventeen years earlier. He used auxiliary cavalry to ford the straits — surprising the defenders who expected only boats. Anglesey's strategic importance as a grain-producing island and its Druidic associations made it a priority.
