History & Significance

The Battle of Inverurie on 23 December 1745 was a significant Jacobite victory in northeast Scotland. Lord Lewis Gordon's Jacobite force routed a government force under Macleod of Macleod — a clan chief who had pledged support to the government. Macleod's men fled in disorder. The victory secured Aberdeen and the Gordon country as a Jacobite recruiting ground and supply zone through the winter. It demonstrated that even without the main army, the Jacobites could maintain military control of northeast Scotland. Lord Lewis Gordon proved a capable regional commander.
