History & Significance

Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury, advanced into the territory of Powys in 1073 building the first castle at Montgomery and establishing the Marcher lordship that bore his name. Welsh forces of Powys mounted skirmishing resistance but could not prevent the Norman advance. Roger used the standard Norman technique of building motte-and-bailey castles as he advanced to consolidate his gains.
