The Battle

History & Significance

From the late 3rd century Irish (Scotti) raids on the western coast of Wales became increasingly severe. The Roman response included constructing watchtowers and coastal forts at Caer Gybi (Holyhead) and other Menai Strait approaches. Despite Classis Britannica patrols, permanent Irish settlement occurred in Pembrokeshire and north Wales — attested by ogham inscriptions at multiple sites. St Patrick was likely captured during one such raid on the Welsh or Somerset coast.

Forces Involved

Classis Britannica patrol craft; small fort garrisons at Holyhead and coastal signal stations
