History & Significance

In 1318 James Douglas led a major raiding expedition that penetrated well into Yorkshire, burning Northallerton, demanding ransom from Ripon and Knaresborough and approaching Boroughbridge. The Yorkshire raids were deeply humiliating for the English government and demonstrated that Scottish military power could operate far beyond the traditional border zone. Religious houses paid heavy tribute to avoid destruction and the social disruption contributed to northern English grievances against Edward II.
