The Battle

History & Significance

After Evesham, a remnant force of disinherited barons under John de Vescy held out in the Isle of Axholme in Lincolnshire, using the fenland and waterways as a natural fortress in the manner of the earlier Ely resistance. Royalist forces under Henry III eventually surrounded the position. Negotiations brokered by Gilbert de Clare brought about a settlement of the Axholme resistance.
