A Scottish noble revolt intercepted James III's army at Lauder Bridge as it marched to resist an English invasion. The nobles hanged several of the king's low-born favourites from the bridge and imprisoned James III himself at Edinburgh Castle. The invasion by the Duke of Albany (with English support) was opportunistic. The episode revealed the deep hostility of the Scottish nobility toward James III's autocratic style and his reliance on non-noble advisers — a pattern that would ultimately cost him his life at Sauchieburn.
