History & Significance

Newbury Castle was contested late in the Anarchy. John FitzGilbert the Marshal held it as part of the network of Berkshire and Wiltshire castles supporting the imperialist cause. The castle exchanged hands during the confused final years of the civil war before the Treaty of Winchester brought peace. Young William Marshal was reputedly held hostage at Newbury during this period.
