The Battle

History & Significance

Major-General John Lambert led a rapid march of Parliamentary cavalry and infantry from London northward to intercept Sir George Booth's rising in August 1659. The speed of Lambert's march — covering over 150 miles in less than a fortnight — prevented the rising from spreading and ensured he arrived at the Cheshire border before Booth could consolidate.
