The Battle

History & Significance

The approach march of David I's Scottish army toward Northallerton before the Battle of the Standard involved preliminary skirmishing with northern English forces who attempted to slow the Scottish advance. The Standard Hill position was chosen by Archbishop Thurstan's forces to intercept the Scottish line of march, and the preliminary manoeuvring in the flat plain north of Northallerton determined where the main battle would be fought.
