The Battle

History & Significance

Prince Henry besieged Aberystwyth Castle in 1407 using artillery and starved the garrison to the point of capitulation. A surrender agreement was reached on condition English relief did not arrive; then Glyndwr appeared with a relief army and the garrison repudiated the surrender. The siege had to be lifted and repeated in 1408. The episode shows the difficulty of maintaining long sieges in Wales and the continued vitality of Glyndwr's field army even late in the rebellion.
