History & Significance

The Year of the Sheep saw Ross-shire tenants rise to expel sheep introduced by Lowland farmers from the straths. At Boath near Alness a large gathering of tenants drove thousands of sheep southward in a coordinated effort to reclaim grazing land. Military was called from Fort George to restore order.
