History & Significance

Cannock Chase — the great forested area of Staffordshire — was used by both sides as cover for cavalry operations, supply movements, and ambushes during the Civil War. The woodland provided concealment for patrols and raiding parties moving between Stafford, Lichfield, and the Royalist garrisons to the north. Several small cavalry skirmishes occurred within or around the Chase in 1644 as both sides contested control of Staffordshire.
