History & Significance

Huntingdon was Oliver Cromwell\'s hometown and became a base for the Eastern Association cavalry he was raising and training. In 1643, Parliamentary forces secured the town and surrounding area, expelling Royalist patrols. The Eastern Association — covering the counties of Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Cambridge, Hertfordshire and later Lincolnshire — was the wealthiest and best-organised Parliamentary regional association, and Cromwell\'s cavalry were the core of its military power. Huntingdon\'s position on the Great North Road made it strategically important.
