History & Significance

The Jacobite forces under Brigadier Mackintosh of Borlum and the northern English Jacobites under Thomas Forster marched south through Cumberland in October–November 1715 on their ill-fated march to Preston. At various points — including the Esk crossings and the border town of Longtown — they encountered and scattered local government militia. The march attracted hundreds of English Catholic and Tory supporters from the Lake Counties and Lancashire before ending in catastrophe at Preston.
