History & Significance

Miles of Gloucester, hereditary Constable of England under the Empress Matilda and lord of Brecknock through his wife, conducted military operations in the Welsh marches during the Anarchy to defend his marcher territories. Several skirmishes with Welsh forces taking advantage of the English civil war occurred in Breconshire. Miles used Brecon Castle as his western base in the complex border politics of the Stephen and Matilda period.
