History & Significance

The rearguard action at Clifton village as the Jacobite army retreated from Derby toward Scotland. Highlanders under Cluny MacPherson and the Glengarry men fought off Cumberland's pursuing dragoons in a night action among enclosures and lanes. One of the last Jacobite actions on English soil. Lord George Murray directed the action brilliantly. Sometimes referred to as separate from Clifton Moor.
