History & Significance

Wareham in Dorset changed hands multiple times during the Anarchy. In 1142 imperialist forces recovered it from Stephen, who had earlier taken it in 1138. The port was strategically vital for communication with Normandy and Anjou. The recovery of Wareham by imperialist forces helped secure the maritime flank of the Empress Matilda s position in the southwest.
