The Battle

History & Significance

William Rufus's first crisis — his uncle Odo of Bayeux led a baronial revolt to put Robert Curthose on the English throne. Rufus appealed to the English people directly and gained crucial English support. Rochester Castle, Odo's final stronghold, fell when the garrison was flushed out by disease. Odo was exiled; Rufus survived his first year as king.
