The Scots crossed the Tweed in January 1644 and began investing Newcastle. After Marston Moor the garrison was isolated; the Scots stormed the town, killing the governor and many defenders. Newcastle's fall deprived the King of his primary coal revenue and blocked Scottish supply lines.
