The Battle

History & Significance

As the Lancastrian army marched south after the Second Battle of St Albans, its northern contingent — poorly disciplined — raided through the Midlands including Stamford in Lincolnshire. The looting and disorder alienated the southern population and helped Edward of York gain London's support. The Chronicle records widespread terror of the "northern men."
