History & Significance

Maximian appointed Carausius to command the fleet against Saxon and Frankish pirates in the English Channel. Carausius proved a capable commander but was accused of allowing raids to happen so he could intercept them on their return and keep the plunder. Condemned to death by Maximian, he proclaimed himself emperor in Britain in 286 AD, creating the Britannic Empire.
