History & Significance

Badbury Rings is one of the largest and most impressive hillforts in Dorset and is a candidate for one of the twenty oppida captured by Vespasian. The nearby Roman town of Vindocladia (Shapwick) suggests a Roman presence immediately after conquest. Later tradition identified Badbury Rings as a possible site for the Battle of Badon Hill, though this is much later speculation.
