History & Significance

This revolt represented one of the final major attempts by the Brigantes, Britain's largest Iron Age tribe, to resist Roman occupation during the 2nd century AD. The Roman victory under Antoninus Pius reinforced control over northern Britain and validated the subsequent construction of the Antonine Wall (142-162 AD), extending Roman frontier security further north into Scotland. The suppression of this uprising demonstrated Rome's military dominance and effectively ended significant organized tribal resistance in the region for decades.
