The establishment of the legionary fortress at Lindum (Lincoln) was a cornerstone of Roman control over the East Midlands. Sited on a prominent ridge above the River Witham, commanding the route north toward the Humber and the route south toward the Thames, Lincoln became one of the most important military bases in Roman Britain. The Ninth Legion used it as the jumping-off point for Cerialis's Brigantes campaign. Lincoln later became a colonia — a city of retired Roman soldiers — giving it the highest civic status in Roman Britain.
