The Battle

History & Significance

At Sherburn-in-Elmet on 15 October 1645 Parliamentary cavalry under Colonel Poyntz intercepted a Royalist force that had ridden south from Scotland after the collapse of Montrose. The Royalists under Sir Marmaduke Langdale were caught in the town and a fierce engagement fought through the streets and surrounding area. Most of the Royalist cavalry was captured or destroyed.
