The Battle

History & Significance

Count Theodosius landed with four veteran regiments — Batavians, Heruli, Jovii, and Victores — and marched to London, blockaded by roaming war bands. He published an amnesty to attract deserters back to the colours, then systematically drove north clearing each zone of raiders and recovering plunder. He rebuilt the Wall, created the new province of Valentia, and re-established the Yorkshire coast signal station system. This was the last major Roman military success in Britain.

Forces Involved

Theodosius with four crack regiments: Batavians, Heruli, Jovii, and Victores — approximately 4,000-6,000 veteran troops
