History & Significance

Islip Bridge over the Cherwell north of Oxford was a contested crossing during Parliamentary operations to encircle Oxford in 1645. Cromwell led a successful cavalry action at Islip Bridge in April 1645, seizing the bridge from Royalist forces defending it and opening the northern approach to Oxford. The action captured over 200 Royalist cavalry.
