History & Significance

In April 1264, the young Prince Edward — the future Edward I — stormed Northampton, which was held by de Montfort's supporters. The garrison included Simon de Montfort the Younger and many rebel leaders, all captured. It was an impressive early demonstration of the military ability that would later make Edward I the most formidable English warrior-king of the medieval period. The victory came just weeks before Lewes, where de Montfort captured the king.
