The Battle

History & Significance

Rhys ap Tewdwr, last independent king of Deheubarth, fought to preserve his kingdom against combined Norman and rival Welsh pressure in the 1080s. He had temporarily fled to Ireland after losing at Mynydd Carn (1081) and returned to rebuild his power. In 1088 he faced renewed challenges from both internal Welsh rivals and Norman expansion from the east. He maintained his kingdom until his death at Brecon in 1093.
