History & Significance

The MacWilliam line continued to produce claimants to the Scottish throne well into Alexander II's reign. In 1215 a revolt broke out in Moray by adherents of the MacWilliam claim. Alexander II responded quickly and the revolt was crushed. The MacWilliam challenge would surface again in 1228 and 1230, showing the persistent appeal of the alternative royal line in the north even as the Canmore dynasty solidified its Norman-style feudal monarchy.
