Royalist forces first fortified Crowland Abbey in 1643, recognising the defensive potential of its fenland island position. Earth banks were thrown up around the abbey and the fenland drainage channels used as a natural moat. The garrison conducted raids into the surrounding fenland before the first Parliamentary investment forced its surrender.
