Ermine Street between Lincoln (Lindum) and York (Eboracum) passed through country disputed between the Corieltauvi and the Brigantes. Following the Brigantian civil wars of the 50s-70s AD, Roman patrols regularly suppressed brigandage and isolated resistance along this route. The road was essential for moving the Ninth Legion between Lincoln and York, and its security was central to Roman control of northern England.
