History & Significance

After the collapse of the Montrose campaign in 1645 and MacColla retreat to Ireland, bands of soldiers and clansmen associated with the MacDonald cause continued to raid into Argyll. Campbell garrisons suppressed these bands throughout 1646 and 1647. This skirmish near Barbreck in mid Argyll was one of the final such encounters as the Covenanting Campbells reasserted control.
