The Battle

History & Significance

When a great storm wrecked several of Haakon's ships on the shore at Largs, Norse crews came ashore to recover supplies and equipment. Scottish forces under Alexander Stewart attacked them. The fighting was confused and neither side could claim a clear victory, but the strategic outcome was entirely Scottish: Haakon had failed in his campaign objective and withdrew northward, dying in Orkney. The Treaty of Perth in 1266 transferred the Western Isles to Scotland for 4,000 marks. The storm was as much a victor as any swordsman.
