The Battle

History & Significance

Maximian, co-emperor with Diocletian, attempted to retake Britain by sea but his fleet was scattered — whether by storm, Carausian action, or both is unclear. The attempt failed and Britain remained under Carausius. Maximian then turned to other frontiers. This represents one of the few periods when Britain had genuine military independence from Rome and its own naval forces capable of defeating an imperial fleet.
