The Battle

History & Significance

During Edward I's final conquest of Wales, Gilbert de Clare led 1,600 infantry and 50 cavalry into Deheubarth and was ambushed and badly beaten at Llandeilo Fawr on 16 June 1282. Clare was dismissed as commander and replaced by William de Valence. The defeat stalled the southern English advance for six weeks at a critical moment in the war. Despite this local success, the war was ultimately lost when Llywelyn was killed six months later.
