After a disastrous night march on 17 June dispersed his remaining forces, Argyll fled in disguise as a countryman and was intercepted while fording a river near Inchinnan by local militia on 18 June; he was taken to Renfrew, then Glasgow, then Edinburgh Castle, and executed on the maiden on 30 June 1685, extinguishing the rising.
