The Battle

History & Significance

One of the most dramatic episodes in Tacitus Agricola: the Caledonians, learning that Agricola had divided his force, attacked the Ninth Legion camp in darkness. They burst through the outer guards and were fighting within the tents before the garrison could organise defence. Agricola received warning and force-marched a relief column through the night, striking the Caledonians from behind at dawn. Caught between the camp garrison and the relief force, the Caledonians withdrew, having failed to destroy the legion.
