History & Significance

Throughout 1644 the Royalist Newark garrison conducted systematic sorties along the Grantham road and into Lincolnshire, ambushing Parliamentary supply convoys and preventing the Eastern Association from concentrating forces. These sorties stretched from Bingham to Grantham and kept the entire corridor in contention.
