History & Significance

Berkhamsted Castle in Hertfordshire fell to French forces under Prince Louis as they extended control across the Home Counties. The castle had symbolic importance as a seat of the earldom of Cornwall. Its surrender demonstrated the breadth of French advance into the midlands. William Marshal later restored royal authority here as part of his reconsolidation after the Fair of Lincoln.
